Our Country is our home, the home which God has given us, placing therein a numerous family which we love and are loved by, and with which we have a more intimate and quicker communion of feeling and thought than with others; a family which by its concentration upon a given spot, and by the homogeneous nature of its elements, is destined for a special kind of activity.
Our future, both as individuals and as a country, is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created, created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination.
We’ve seen a lot of patriots and they all died just like anybody else if it hurt bad enough and once they were dead their patriotism was only good for legends; this is because in the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot. Yet some can be patriots who have no self-respect, and sacrifice the greater to the less. They love the soil, which makes their graves, but have no sympathy with the spirit, which may still animate their clay. Patriotism is a maggot in their heads.
As a people, we have lost more than enough; material, lives, finances and most of all, time. From the pre independence struggles of Koitale arap Samoei, Dedan Kimathi, Mekatilili wa Menza, to the untimely deaths of JM Kariuki, Pio Gama-Pinto, Argwings Kodhek, Tom Mboya, Robert Ouko… that ushered in Robert Njoya, Kijana Wamalwa, James Orengo, Keneth Matiba, David Gitari, Martin Shikuku, Masinde Muliro, Oginga Odinga and the 1992 uprising not forgetting the innocent blood shed after the 2007 disputed elections, Kenyans have had only one cry, CHANGE. True change that will only be achieved through a NEW CONSTITUTIONAL DISPENSATION!
As Samuel Adams said “If you love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen”
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. If we knew only for a moment, who we really are, where we’ve come from and where we are going, then we have no option but to say YES…!
